Adventures of the Black Square, Whitechapel Gallery, London
‏This exhibition of over 100 artists’ work features paintings, photographs and sculptures that symbolise Modernism’s utopian aspirations. Its starting point is Kazimir Malevich’s radical painting of a black square, first shown in Russia 100 years ago. Other artists on show include Vladimir Tatlin, Hélio Oiticica, Lyubov Popova, Piet Mondrian and Liam Gillick. A 288-page exhibition catalogue, edited by Whitechapel director Iwona Blazwick, accompanies the show.

Carla Zaccagnini, Firstsite, Colchester
‏This installation by São Paulo-based Argentinian artist Carla Zaccagnini examines a series of actions by Suffragettes that took place in British museums between 1913 and 1914. Over 20 artworks and artefacts at the Manchester Art Gallery and the National Gallery in London were attacked by protestors, and the exhibition also includes a series of new sculptures based on the weapons used by the Suffragettes.

Jessica Ramm, Tramway, Glasgow
‏Jessica Ramm’s films, sculptures and performances explore the relationships between humans, the environment and technology. Her work often involves reconfigurations of objects and materials drawn from nature, alluding to mythological themes as well as different notions of space and matter. The new sculptural works in Tramway 5 (the venue’s smaller gallery space) are commissioned as part of the Rip It Up series, which supports the making of new work.

extra{ordinary} – Photographs of Britain by the Caravan Gallery, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland
‏This exhibition features over 100 colour photographs taken over the last 15 years and aims to show the ‘extraordinary in the everyday’. The Caravan Gallery duo of Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale present an intriguing record of social change since the millennium and the show, which is accompanied by a 132-page hardback publication, will tour the UK until winter 2016 taking in Bradford, Cardiff, Preston, Middlesbrough and Southampton.

Craig Wood, Oriel Davies Gallery, Powys
Featured in this solo exhibition by Swansea-based Scottish artist Craig Wood is a large-scale sculptural installation and video projection, plus a series of delicate paper necklaces and painted maps. The work explores nationalism and shifting power structures, focusing on both individual and collective experiences
