Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1991, Fiona Rae’s latest solo show features a new batch of greyscale paintings created over the last 12 months. In addition to these abstract compositions are a series of small-scale charcoal drawings, a new medium for the artist.

Francis Bacon and the Masters, Sainsbury Centre For Visual Arts, Norwich
This intriguing exhibition places Francis Bacon alongside old and modern masters including Velázquez, Rembrandt, Titian, Michelangelo, Rodin, Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse. Although it’s received a mixed reaction, there is no denying the intense power of Bacon’s gruelling vision. With 100 works on show it’s a must-see.

Cally Spooner, Spike Island, Bristol
For this exhibition Cally Spooner has transformed Spike Island’s galleries into a kind of post-production studio. Exploring the terrain of the editorial cover-up, she makes the final edits to her ongoing project, And You Were Wonderful, On Stage, which began as a live musical commissioned and produced by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in 2013.

Aideen Doran, Grand Union, Birmingham
This show takes the form of an experimental research project investigating Birmingham city as a space for artistic, economic and ideological production. The gallery space houses a revolving series of curated materials including archival documents, images and video.

Mick Peter, Tramway, Glasgow
This solo exhibition of sculpture by the Glasgow-based artist draws on a number of sources, including literature, commercial illustration and graphic design. Peter transforms sketches and squiggles into materials such as concrete, acrylic resin and polyurethane.
