London-based John Lawrence has won the Oriel Davies Open 2014 for his HD Video works Fuxing TV Writers (2013) and I’ve Been Loving you too Long (2013). He receives £1000 and a solo show at Oriel Davies Gallery.

Slade MA student Ruaidhri Ryan is the student prizewinner, selected for his 8mm film BRETON (Scout) and HD work The Lining of my Bag, Bedroom and Other Linings (both 2013). He receives £500.

The two artists were selected from a shortlist of over 60 by a panel comprising of Deirdre Figueiredo (director, Craftspace), Helen Legg (director, Spike Island), Anthony Shapland (artist and co-director, g39) and Alex Boyd Jones (curator, Oriel Davies).

“It is so fantastic to have so many talented artists enter the Open every year and especially pleasing to award prizes this year to two excellent artists whose work I have newly been introduced to,” said Boyd Jones.

A final award – the People’s Choice Prize – will be announced in early July after the show closes. £250, sponsored by Newtown Station Travel, will be awarded to the artist who receives the most votes from the public.

The exhibition continues at Oriel Davies Gallery until 18 June. A full list of all selected artists can be viewed here.
