The Contemporary Art Society has announced the four-strong shortlist for its sixth annual award, devised specifically for a museum to commission a contemporary artist to create an ambitious new work for their collection.

In the running for the £40,000 award are: The Harris Museum & Art Gallery with artist Nathanial Mellors; Leeds Art Gallery with Becky Beasley; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art with Marvin Gaye Chetwynd; and Whitworth Art Gallery with Martin Boyce.

The shortlist was selected by a jury consisting of Paul Bonaventura, senior research fellow in fine art studies at the Ruskin School of Fine Art; Helen Legg, director of Spike Island, Bristol; Tom Morton, writer, curator and contributing editor at Frieze; and the artist Eva Rothschild.

Morton said: “We were looking for work that people would travel to see and it is exciting to see museums proposing new works by artists whose practice includes less traditional disciplines such as performance and moving image.”

Caroline Douglas, director of the Contemporary Art Society, said of the award: “It creates a unique opportunity for an artist to create new work for a museum and the panel’s selection includes highly regarded artists who are under-represented in public collections, particularly outside London.”

The 2014 winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 24 November.
