Now in its second year, The Lumen Prize is an international award ‘that celebrates the very best fine art created digitally’. The competition offers a total prize fund of US$5,250 plus inclusion in the Lumen Prize Exhibition which will begin a global tour in Cardiff before moving on to New York City. 50 works will be chosen for exhibition while the Lumen Online Gallery will consist of 100 works.

The competition is aimed at artists working with smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and computers, and seeks to highlight this growing field of practice to a global public that is increasingly interested in art created with the latest technology.

The 2013 Jury includes artists Gordon Young, and Ivor Davies, journalist Grace Glueck and art critic Barbara Isenberg. First prize is $3,000, plus there are runners-up prizes of US$1,000 and US$750. A People’s Choice award of US$250 will be selected from works included in the Lumen Online Gallery and The Founder’s Prize of US$250 will be awarded by Lumen’s CEO and Founder, Carla Rapoport.

In 2012, the competition attracted entries from more than 30 countries with Swedish artist Tommy Ingberg winning the $3,000 first prize for his work Torn. The exhibition included 12 time-based works, 34 2-D works, two interactive works, and two 3-D works. Works were displayed on large-scale screens, PCs, tablets, smartphones and high-definition projectors.

The Lumen Prize is organised by Treberfydd Foundation and proceeds, after costs, will go to Peace Direct, a charity that supports vital work with local peacebuilders around the world. Artists working in certain countries where Peace Direct is active will be able to enter the contest for free.
