We all need to feel safe. But in our stressful lives, facing an uncertain future, safety is often an illusion. Confronted with war, persecution, discrimination or domestic abuse, we might leave everything behind to search for somewhere truly safe. Threatened with homelessness, illness or loneliness, any of us might take desperate measures to find – or hold onto – our own place of refuge.

What does a place of safety mean to you? A roof over your head or money in the bank? Family and friends or a stranger to talk to? A lock on the door or a gun in your hand? A sense of purpose or a sense of belonging?

We asked artists to help us understand what seeking, finding, giving or losing a place of safety means to them, so that we can examine what it means to seek – or to provide – refuge.

We invite you to discover those selected during FaB17, 27 May to 11 June.
