Stellar
This exhibition of artworks inspired by celestial happenings is accompanied by events such as a star- and moon-gazing tour led by astronomer Paul Hill with an accompanying photographic workshop. The exhibition is a collaboration between Black Hole Club and Lumen, an art collective who create work exploring themes of astronomy and light, and on 4 May Melanie King will be talking about Lumen’s activities.
27 April – 4 May 2018, Vivid Projects, 16 Minerva Works, 158 Fazeley Street, Birmingham B5 5RS.

…delayed rays of a star…
Taking as a starting point an image of her mother discovered shortly after her death, artist Helen Kincaid has created a body of work that forensically deconstructs the image-making process to question how much of an image is required to stimulate meaning. Relating to Walter Benjamin’s descriptions of ‘the posthumous shock’, Kincaid writes: ‘This arrangement of pigment on paper, this chemical reaction activated all those years ago, felt like the light from a distant star – reaching me only now!’. The private view on 26 April will include a Q&A discussion between the artist and theorist Jean Boyd.
26 April – 19 May 2018, Hardwick Gallery, Hardwick Campus, St Paul’s Road, Cheltenham GL50 4BS.

New Defence exhibition
Nine artists respond to the theme of defence or to the site or history of Coalhouse Fort, where this pop-up exhibition takes place. Built to fortify the Thames estuary in the late 1800s, the site has been used for defensive purposes since the 1400s. The exhibition was initiated through the digital archiving work of Michael Whelan and Laurynas Karmalavicius around the fort’s archive, the physical version of which is at Thurrock Museum.
27-28 April 2018, Coalhouse Fort, Princess Margaret Road, East Tilbury, London RM18 8PB.
