Yorkshire-based institution recipient of £100,000 prize given to a regional UK arts organisation to mount a major solo show dedicated to a mid-career woman artist.
London-based Welsh artist wins £30,000 prize designed to recognise a significant contribution to the development of contemporary sculpture.
This week’s selection of recommended shows includes: ‘Drag: Self-portraits and Body Politics’, at the Hayward Gallery, London; a group show in Edinburgh of works made in protest at Pussy Riot’s 2012 imprisonment in Russia; and Elisabeth Frink sculptures at Abbott Hall Art Gallery in Kendal.
Five artists have been announced for the biennial award, which recognises a British or UK-based artist of any age, at any stage in their career, who have made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary sculpture.
Serena Korda has for the last two years been based in Newcastle as the Norma Lipman/Baltic Fellow in Ceramic Sculpture at Newcastle University, culminating in a show at Baltic, Gateshead. Laura Robertson talks to her about this and her current exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield, exploring how she draws on local myths and rites for her ceramic and sound pieces.
This week’s selection of recommended shows includes: light installation at the Hepworth, Wakefield; sound, video and installation at Chapter, Cardiff; and moving image and photographic works at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea.
Taking its inspiration from the 1940s’ School Prints project featuring works by artists such as Picasso and Henry Moore, prints by Martin Creed, Jeremy Deller, Anthea Hamilton, Helen Marten, Haroon Mirza and Rose Wylie will be sold to fund learning programme that will help children engage with art.
Tate Modern and The Hepworth Wakefield are amongst the five nominees for the £100,000 annual award.
The London-based artist, who is shortlisted for this year’s Turner Prize, wins the £30,000 biennial award.
