Curator Ralph Rugoff has announced the artists who will feature in the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale, which will take place 11 May to 24 November 2019.

The International Exhibition, which this year is titled ‘May You Live In Interesting Times’, will feature 79 artists in total with Rugoff describing their work as reflecting “upon precarious aspects of existence today, including different threats to key traditions, institutions and relationships of the ‘post-war order’”.

Rugoff, who is director of London’s Hayward Gallery, explained that the exhibition will be presented as ‘Proposition A’ in the city’s Arsenale and ‘Proposition B’ in the main pavilion of the Giardini site. Each space will have the same artist list, but will include different groups of work.

Rugoff said: “I’d like to think that there will be visitors – who don’t really like to read wall texts – that might go to the two exhibitions and think they are seeing work by totally different artists.”

Compared to recent biennales, the exhibition features fewer artists – Christine Macel’s 2017 exhibition included 120 artists while Okwui Enwezor’s 2015 edition had 138. Also in contrast to previous editions, the participating artists are all still living and working.

The British or UK-based artists featured in the list are Michael Armitage, Ed Atkins, Jesse Darling, Anthea Hamilton, and Christian Marclay. Other artists include this year’s Artes Mundi Prize winner Apichatpong WeerasethakulLawrence Abu HamdanZanele Muholi, and Hito Steyerl.
