I’m experiencing a lot of issues relating to trying to recover my career.
This blog raises some of the same issues I face: https://exeuntmagazine.com/features/carers-as-artists/
Faced with a cut to income as an #ExcludedUK artist, I applied for an Arts & Heritage role.
The people I spoke to actually told me that they’d grifted from my role as Director of Lincoln Artists’ Network to gain Arts Council funding
So, what happens is that you are forced to give up your creative efforts to focus on your caring role, and then others come and claim your success for themselves.
Then they discriminate against you as a carer, as my application “wasn’t as strong” as other applicants.
What kind of psychological torture is that?
Are these arts organisations providing any inclusivity for arts professionals who are balancing a caring role?
There’s certainly no flexibility in their part time role, when they ask to commit two Saturdays a month – weekends are the best time for me to get on top of the housework, and deal with any issues, along with the time for respite, whether or not I can actually have any with no respite funding.
I require flexible working from day 1 of any paid role.
I would be the best professional to make sure that’s provided for, but I’m hit with a form of executive dysfunction that gives me a headache.
